The No. 1 Choice for Learner Drivers

The No. 1 Choice for Learner Drivers

Learning to drive is one of the most important events in a young person's life and as soon as they turn 17 they are keen to get behind the wheel. On the other hand, many parents are reluctant to allow their children to practice in their cars because of the cost of the insurance or the worry that their no-claims bonus could be at risk but you can now purchase a separate insurance policy in the name of the learner driver.

Your own comprehensive insurance

Provisional Marmalade provides insurance cover to allow you to drive a family or friend's car. It is a comprehensive insurance policy that covers you rather than the car owner against all of the normal third party and comprehensive risks as a result of a collision.

Protect your parent's no claim bonus

If something does happen whilst you are driving and a claim is made against you, our claims handler will deal with your claim and your parent's insurance company will not be involved. Their no-claim status is not affected.

We insure cars up to Group 16

Since we can cover all cars up to and including group 16 cars the chances of us not being able to cover your parent's car are minimal. e.g. Audi A4 2.0 or a BMW 530D.

Driving Standards Agency recommends practice

The Driving Standards Agency actively supports a balance of professional tuition and a minimum 22 hours of practice with friends or family before taking the practical driving test. This could be just driving to school with Mum and Mum taking the car back or going out at the weekend with Dad.

Insurance From Just £2.99 a Day!

Provisional Insurance costs as little as £90.95 per month in low risk areas, up £99.50 in high risk areas.

Provisional Insurance For Young Drivers

Insurance Tips For Young Drivers

New drivers think they have it made. They no longer have to depend on someone else to take them places. They are finally free to drive the roads by themselves. They think about their new car that they are planning on buying and on being able to drive their friends around town. Then they check out the prices of new drivers car insurance and realise they may not be able to drive their own car. It can be just as bad before that stage, when you need to get provisional licence insurance cover.

Car insurance companies charge a high premium for provisional and young drivers. In some cases the insurance can appear to be unattainable for many young drivers. Although they now have the freedom to drive on their own and to own their own car, they may be forced to drive their parent’s car for a while. The insurance on the family car will increase but it will not be as bad as if the new driver was the primary on the car.

learner drivers are inexperienced. They make a lot of mistakes that can cause a serious accident. In many cases the young driver thinks that they are a better driver than what they really are. They may think they are skilled enough to handle high speeds or to take unnecessary chances. Unfortunately they are not skilled enough for this. More young people die on the roadways than by any other cause. It is because of this that the insurance companies make the premiums so high. There are some insurance companies who do not want the business. To them it is not worth the high risk they take with provisional and young drivers. These companies will set their prices so high that no one can afford to pay them. Sometimes the premiums will be worth more than the car that is being insured many times over.

What can you do when you are looking for affordable
insurance for a young driver? They can take a safe drivers course that will teach them how to drive under different circumstances. These courses will teach a new driver how to drive defensively. Young drivers do not always realise they must watch out for the other people on the road. A safety course in driving can teach them how to react if a car pulls out in front of them or a car swerves into their lane. It will teach them how to prevent an accident from happening. Car insurance companies will often offer a nice discount to new drivers who take one of these driving courses. This can lower the high premium significantly.

A young or provisional driver must obey the laws of the road. By keeping their driving record clean it will reflect that they are a safe driver. Insurance companies are apt to lower the premiums for safe drivers no matter what their age. Another way to lower premiums is to hold off on buying that new car for a while. Instead drive the family car to get the needed experience and proof that you are a safe driver. As long as you are a named driver on someone else’s insurance, you can earn points on safe driving. Insurance companies will look at your record and if there have been no violations or claims on the insurance you will be able to get a better rate on your car insurance.

Provisional Insurance - How Can A Black Box Help Learners?

Provisional Insurance - How Can A Black Box Help Learners?

Learning to drive can be difficult, unfortunately finding affordable provisional insurance can also be pretty tricky.

If you're learning to drive you will naturally be looking at cutting motoring costs, especially since the running costs appear to be constantly growing.

Car insurance is yet another cost faced by young people looking to get on the road and, when going through a traditional car insurance firm or broker this can prove pretty expensive. This is why so many learner drivers are turning to high-tech, black box insurance cover - such as iKube since this tends to be cheapest option for many.

Not only could black box insurance saves the learner driver a substantial amount of money but it could also turn them into a safer, more conscientious driver when taking to the road.

iKube’s black box provisional insurance utilises a GPS or “telematics” device that is installed under the vehicle’s dashboard to collect data about the car whilst driving. iKube simply offer up to 25% discount on provisional insurance at the start – based on the assumption that you won’t drive between 11pm – 5am (the riskiest time of night to drive for young drivers, according to statistics).

However, the iKube black box measures more than just the time of day you drive. It also checks other elements, such as speed, harshness of braking, how fast the motorist takes corners, etc.

This information can actually be accessed by the learner driver or full licensed young driver on their iKube account so that they can see their driving style and, if necessary, alter it to improve their technique and manner on the road.

iKube simply uses this information at renewal so, whether it’s provisional insurance or the full licence product, you could get up to 40% discount on renewal – as long as you’ve driven well.

Provisional Insurance - A Quick Guide

Provisional Insurance - A Quick Guide

Provisional insurance is legally required if you're learning to drive and own your own car, especially if you take it out whilst accompanied by a parent or friend.

At the very minimum - a learner driver requires third party provisional insurance. Let's face facts - learning to drive can be expensive and at an average cost of £24 per hour's lesson - the costs can quickly mount up.

As a result many young drivers are opting to take additional, private tuition in their own car - through qualified family members or friends as a way of keeping costs low.

If this sounds like you - then you need to make sure that you have comprehensive or third-party provisional insurance to ensure that you're covered whilst driving.

Did you know?

1.    You must be insured for the car you drive - whether you have a full or provisional licence.

2.    A driving school's car is already covered - so you won't need to buy additional cover if you plan to solely drive your instructor's car whilst learning.

3.    Lessons in private cars need dedicated provisional insurance cover.

4.    You must ensure that you have either third party or comprehensive learner driver car insurance.

Unfortunately, due to the risks posed by learner drivers, many insurers will not offer provisional insurance. However, iKube specialises in finding the right cover for you. To find out more please visit our learner driver insurance page or give us a call on the number above

Short term insurance for provisional drivers

Short term insurance for provisional drivers

You've just received your green provisional licence through the post and you're now excited to get behind the wheels for some driving lessons. The first thing you will need to do is find yourself someone to teach you how to drive. Okay, here are your options: contact the local driving schools in your area, go with a private driving instructor who has been recommended by somebody you know or learn with a family member or friend. But whichever option you choose, you will need to have provisional car insurance before you drive.

Lessons with driving schools cost around £22 and going with a private instructor is usually a couple of pounds cheaper. The Driving Standards Agency recommends that you have at least 42 hours of practice before taking your driving test, so that will cost you roughly £920 as a minimum. You will need more practice than that though to become a really confident driver and pass first time round. For that reason,
many learner drivers choose to learn with a relative/friend as it is free and they consequently make huge savings on driving lessons which would have otherwise been charged by a driving instructor.

This is all good except for one thing - when you are learning in a driving instructor's car, be it with a driving school or a private instructor, there is a learner car insurance on the vehicle you're driving which protects you in the event of an accident. However this is not the case when you are driving your parent's or friend's car. Therefore you will need to purchase some kind of car insurance which covers provisional licence holders.

As a matter of fact, it is illegal to drive or learn to drive in the UK if you do not have proper insurance cover in place. Now you don't want to get a driving conviction before you even get hold of your full driving licence, do you? Therefore it is necessary for you to find a car insurance company which will be ready to insure you and believe me, there are just a few of them out there.

So which company does provisional insurance then?

There are some companies which offer provisional driver insurance but the quotes are really high. Why? Because they use the traditional methods of calculating insurance but give a heavier risk weight to your application because you're still a learner and this results in an expensive annual premium. However if you wanted something short term wise to help you with your driving, then you need to go with an insurance company which specialises in car insurance for learner drivers like the one listed below:

Collingwood Learner Driver Insurance

They offer car insurance for short periods to enable you to drive the car of your parents, friends or relatives and what is even better is that you can apply with just a provisional licence without risking the vehicle's owner no claims bonus. If you get put down on your dad's insurance as a provisional driver and hit a tree while learning, the claim to the insurer will mean that your dad will lose some of his NCB. With provisional insurance however, you become the policyholder and claims go on your name without affecting your parents no claims discount. Check it out for yourself!
